How To Detect A Gas Leak In A House
There are many ways to detect a natural gas leak in a house, from a simple bubble test to high-end gas-sniffing devices costing hundreds of dollars. The people from TopTes (makers of an inexpensive gas leak detector) reached out to me on my BPV Facebook page and asked if I would consider featuring their product in one of my videos.
They were kind enough to send one over and I said if it stands up to the test, I'll be happy to post a video. My opinion when it comes to finding gas leaks in your home is to always call in your licensed professional or local utility. That being said, for the price point of this product and the fact that it does detect leaks quickly, you might consider keeping o...

American Standard Flush Valve Gasket
Просмотров 3,3 тыс.Год назад
It's been a while since I replaced this American Standard Flush Valve Gasket! Truth be told there are not too many of these around any longer. But these sisters are long-time customers who inherited the home from their parents and have lived here for almost 90 years. It's a vintage "Regency Blue" American Standard bathroom that was done over in the 1960s and they don't want to replace it. Espec...
Steam Boiler Leaking Water
Просмотров 6 тыс.Год назад
This new homeowner inherited a steam boiler leaking water and called me in to check things out. I ran the boiler under pressure and discovered the pipe (nipple) exiting the right side of the boiler leaking. To the novice, it looks like a simple repair, just replace that short nipple, and the job is done correctly? Not so fast! In order to get that nipple out I had to dismantle part of the Hartf...
Clawfoot Tub Shower Kit

Considering a clawfoot tub shower kit? There are numerous companies that offer several options in many finishes. Before you make your decision do some due diligence because the quality of the product varies across the board. Most if not all of the kits I've installed are imported products not made in the good old U.S.A. They look really good but fall short on longevity, especially if you are an...
Drain Pipe Patch
Просмотров 10 тыс.Год назад
Drain pipe patch? If you're in a situation where you need to patch a hole in a drain pipe or cover a hole in a vent pipe that you drilled out to snake a drain, this works all the time. Normally I would use a traditional pipe clamp or repair plate to get the job done, but I often fail to keep adequate stock in my van. When this happens I simply take a traditional no-hub coupling and remove the r...
Toto Drake Comfort Height Elongated Toilet
Просмотров 6 тыс.Год назад
This customer wanted to replace his Kohler Rialto one-piece toilet w/ a new modern comfort height toilet. He left that choice to me and I recommended a Toto Drake Comfort Height Elongated Toilet. My choice was the 1.6 g.p.f. version and to my dismay, could not locate one. Why? Local Law 57 of 2010 (on.nyc.gov/3QLodYC) Because we're not allowed to install them in the Big Apple! The only availabl...
Toilet Wax Seal Leak
Просмотров 6 тыс.Год назад
So this customer did have a toilet wax seal leak, but truth be told the toilet flange was so far below the floor, that the wax didn't make contact with the bowl. This was a newly renovated home with a total of four toilets. Several months after the renovation two of the toilets leaked to the floors below and she called the contractor back. They pulled two toilets and reset them. She's not a hap...
Clogged Garbage Disposal Drain

Have a clogged garbage disposal drain? I hope you have an accessible clean-out available to snake out the clogged drain. If not be prepared to open your wallet to have one installed, cause chances are the disposal will have to be removed to clean the drain line. Every time I run across a job with a garbage disposal a relatively simple fix turns into a major production costing the customer way m...
Delta Kitchen Faucet Rebuild Kit
Просмотров 20 тыс.Год назад
In this Delta Kitchen Faucet Re-Build Kit Video, I re-visit a video I did about 9 years ago (link in description). It's a pretty straightforward job anyone can perform with a few basic hand tools. The key to a successful outcome is to use the original Delta parts widely available. Although a bit more costly than the aftermarket re-build kits available from your favorite 'Big Box" stores, the lo...

Very practical approach. But, I want to find that paperback, or its modern equivalent, buy, and read it. I'm 78. I was helpong my Dad do plumbinh on his rental houses about 65 years ago. Now, I do a job once in a blue moon. I can't afford to pay plumbers the cost of a shady lawyer. THANK YOU, Sit!
Skip all the blah blah to 5:50
Can this be done without turning the water off?
Sure, as long as the faucet is in the off position you can perform the task. No need to shut the water.
@@BobsPlumbingVideos Thank you so much, and thank you for your video.
I used a 1 1/2 inch x 1 1/4 inch coupling,nipple through the wall is 1 1/2 ,then put a 1 1/2 ptrap
I would of start with pipe wrench on the thread first
NICE FAKE VIDEO BRO NEXT TIME TRY A PIECE THAT IS GLUED. YOU HAD NOTHING BUT A SMALL DAB OF GLUE ON THAT PIECE ALL THE REST IS THE PURPLE CLEANER COME ON NOW
BULLSHIT!
I learned many different skills from you and gained the confidence to tackle some jobs I never would have otherwise. Thanks
Glad to help, thanks for the confidence! Bob.
I’ve just done a repair like that in a very old house in the uk. This video has confirmed that I did it right !
Excellent! Glad it helped. Bob.
Great! On point...
Appreciated!
Can you repack a 125 gate valve with it fully open? I just found out they have a back seat. In a boiler with low water pressure 14-15psi max in my case would it work or piss out like crazy? It already leaks past the stem with the packing nut off when the gate valve is turned off. Wondering if it would leak less fully open against the back seat with the packing nut off.
My opinion is that it would piss out, I wouldn't attempt it.
@@BobsPlumbingVideos I'll turn it off. It's a piss off when your shut off valve doesn't fully shut off. Gate valves appear to be notorious for this. I know not to overtighten them as the last thing I need is it to break. Once the handle stops turning off that's it,stop,no force.
It works! I used a Sabre saw with metal cutting blades. Took a while but I could see the progress. Great video.
Nice work! Thanks for checking out the video, much appreciated. Bob.
Thanks goodness for these videos because my good for nothing alcoholic womanizing absent father didn’t teach me shit
You're welcome and thanks for taking the time to watch. Bob.
7:46 this is one of the few videos that explains the bonnet retaining nut adjustment & how it should be used to create the tension on the ball assembly.
Thank you my friend, appreciate the shout out! Bob.
Bob, Thank you for your demonstration in every day language. I have an outside faucet that uses a rubber packing washer and I can't even find one that looks like mine. I am heading out to get packing right now. Thank you
Thanks for sharing My pleasure to help, thanks so much for checking out the video. Much appreciated!
I have a MCAVITY 125 gate valve from 1950 that has a very slow drip past the stem. I tried tightening the packing nut but that wont stop it. It's one of two return shutoff valves on my boiler. The other return shutoff valve is much newer and shuts the whole return side off. I thought there would be graphite packing string inside the packing nut,but theres some type of rubber washer in there,so I put the nut back on as water leaks past the gate valve when shut off. The stem width is .390" or 25/64. The thread width the packing nut goes over is .924" or 59/64. The rather large packing nut is 1.12" wide and takes a 1-1/8 wrench. The packing nut is 3/4" long. Do you know what size packing washer it would take? I think the ID would be 3/8" but not sure what the OD would need to be.
If I was faced with this, I would A. remove the washer put a couple of rounds of graphite down into the cavity followed by the washer then the packing nut and then tighten. B. If it still was passing water I would place a round or two or three more over the rubber washer and whack the packing nut back down.
@@BobsPlumbingVideos Thanks.I would prefer to not remove the washer for fear of possibly damaging it and having no backup washer on hand. Not sure how tight it is in there. Going by the large size of the packing nut would it be better to use the thicker 5/32 packing string instead of 3/32 and is teflon ptfe packing string ok? There's lots of room inside that packing nut. Is it possible the packing washer size it takes is obsolete? There's a local industrial plumbing supply store I was going to visit and see what they have.
I have lots of plumbing experience and stick with pipe dope only.. Teflon tape IMO just gets in the way of the seal.. The threads are made to seal without the sealant.. The dope is actually just a lubricant..
So I'm in this predicament this very moment. Just to clarify, that is a nut and threading (separate pieces) right??? It's not just one piece of plastic made to look like a nut threaded up this pipe, correct? Before I take a saw blade to this as the last resort, I've sprayed some oil on it to see if it will come loose.
Unless some genius decided to glue them together, they're separate pieces, always.
Thanks for sharing the benefit of your experience.
My pleasure!
Great video. Informative and clear. Appreciate it.
My pleasure! Glad it was helpful.Bob.
what about copper Flexes
Don't see them often here in N.Y. but they do sell them in the big box stores.
Where was the drain field?
A concrete cesspool just before the septic tank approximately 20 feet below ground level filled with gravel and surrounded by a sand backfill.
Thank you for the informative video, lightning blew up my tank only and left my bowl completely intact and was confused how to install a new one
You're welcome! Glad it was helpful!
Can you use brass vlaves on steel pipe?
Not recommended! It will cause the steel to corrode.
Worked great, thanks.
You're welcome! Glad it helped.
This little problem is the reason A product called a jam bar is made. But thank you for the video it's good to have Other techniques and dealing with the same problem
Very old school method, but it works if you don't have or can't fit a multi-tool with a metal cutting blade.
What is the correct way to seal BSP or G thread with out the machined face for the gasket. ?
Not quite sure what you mean by BSP / G threads? Can you forward a photo? Send to info@robertsessaplumbing.com.
FlexSeal wrapped with heavy, waterproof tape actually works on similar leaks...
YOU ARE SO EXCELLENT INSTRUCTOR. THANK YOU
I appreciate that! Glad it was helpful👍
Nice video and technique It would have been nice to clean up the mess created by all this work with a vacuum first before putting everything back together.
Great insider information. I can use the Bluevue gasket assembly. You fully covered the the topic.
Glad it was helpful!
Quick question. If you block the tub from inside the tub with a stopper does the Overflow drain system still work?
Yes!
Very informative. Hope all is well.
Yes, thank you
I have that contraption in my 100 year old building. I wouldn't trade it for the world. Because I also have a very large bedroom a very large living room a large foyer area separate kitchen separate bathroom three closets. These new buildings are like micro apartments. You're lucky if you can get a twin bed in one of them. #teamprewar.
Your amazing Bob. You have the gift of being able to see in advance in your mind how your going to be able to get through the problems you see coming
Very kind of you, thanks for checking out the video!
Bob, you are always the best!! I haven't seen one of your videos in a while. Pop-up on my phone and this one here is perfect as usual. Ps.... It's been a while since i've been over on that slide of the Goffles bridge. I used to live in The little town in the middle of edison new jersey
Thanks much! Appreciate you watching. It's been a while since I've posted, trying to get back in the groove, regards. Bob.
@@BobsPlumbingVideos You handle stuff that?I wouldn't even dream about trying to do by myself. Therefore i'm not even qualified to tie your shoes in my opinion
GREAT explanation
Thanks for watching👍

Glad it was helpful! Thanks for stopping by!
Whack that nut up! Lol
Just because you got straight to the point didn't ask to like or subscribe to the channel and give a whole story before the video I liked and subscribed. Good vid
Good video but this tool is a waste if time under the kitchen sink to remove water supply hose and absolutely no help to remove the tub faucet bolt. I think it is worthless and a waste of money. I am just angry Rigid put this scam on us.
Nice to hear my thoughts being used to assure my game plan. AWESOME JOB THANKS
Thanks for viewing! Bob.
Very informative and interesting video! Excellent!
Glad you enjoyed it! Many Thanks!!
Thanks you SO much for your video!!! I went to my local HD store & bought 2 different internal pipe or nipple extractors, one that has a cam style (Husky 1003 002 606) and the other that has an easy out type end that is not tapered, & is way too short (Husky 1004 568 186), BTW I smashed my finger when trying to tap it into the pipe! I worked on it for over and hour with both tools with no luck. Tried to extend the easy out type with a 13/16" socket with a 4" extender, but it still didn't work, it just didn't grab. The cam type grabbed sometimes but the pipe wouldn't turn, I think it's because it puts too much pressure outward on the inside of the elbow as you turn it, basically clamping it into the female elbow. After much frustration I ended up ordering the Superior Tool 1/2" nipple extractor # 5245 from ACE, they didn't carry it at my local store but was able to get it delivered to the store for no shipping cost (about $17). You can also get it shipped directly to you. I put the extractor in with a few light taps of my pliers and used a 11/16 deep socket with a 3/8" ratchet and it came right out! Talk about having the right tool for the job!! I needed the extension because my shower is a mud (cement) job & the elbow is quite far in. The trick with this tool over the 2 Husky tools is the teeth on the Superior extractor are sharp and really dig into the metal, it is also tapered so even though my shower arm was not perfectly round (due to using my 12" slip Channel Lock pliers trying to get it out) it fit right in. The tool is just "Superior" to the other 2 tools! I also liked your idea of using the handle of the pliers to help install the shower arm.
But if the pipe is in wall, how are you going to hold it steady with a vice?? 🤔 😂
Bingo! You're not!!
Thank you thank you thank you!!! I tried with the hack saw and screw driver but it didn't come loose. So I got out the multi tool. I didn't do this first because I really didn't think it would fit in the tight area I was working in. But ten seconds later the valve was free to take out. I never would have thought of this had you not suggested. Thank you again!
Thank You for checking out the video! Well done!! Bob.
Very clear and well-explained video. It helped me fix my main linking valve.
Glad it helped, thanks for taking the time to check out the video!
I’m a plumber but never asked what this tool does. I would have fixed my shower last night if I knew sooner. Will fix this after work today now though since I have this tool.
Im installing the flange and toilet to sub and layer gonna pipe to septic tank need to shim up for finish floor right ?
Correct! Flush would be ideal but you could go as much as 1/4" above the finished floor and still be good to go.
